A Visit To Stone Tower Winery

In January while tasting wine at Buena Vista Winery, we got to talking to the woman leading our wine tasting and found out she went to school in Virginia. This led to talks about the Virginia wineries and how far they have come in the last few years. She suggested a winery that has been on our radar for a few years, but we just had not made it out for a visit. The suggested winery was Stone Tower Winery, located on Hogback Mountain Road in Leesburg Virginia. When we returned from Napa, we decided it was time to finally visit this winery. Who better to go with than my cousin Lizey and her husband Steve. We all tasted wines in Napa and it only made sense for them to be part of this winery visit.

Doing a little research in advance, I found Stone Tower Winery has two buildings where you can do tastings. The Harvest Barn is family friendly and dog friendly and then Tower View, which is 21 and older only. We decided on the Tower View building for our tasting. The buildings and property are beautiful. The tasting room was a grand room with wood paneling and a large wine bar in the middle towards the back. Surrounded by cozy comfortable sofas and chairs, chandeliers and tables to enjoy wine after your tasting. Rustic modern is how I would describe the tasting room.

We took our place at the bar and were greeted by our wine tasting leader Kevin. It is so important to the experience to have not only a knowledgeable tasting leader, but a lively person who is willing to answer all questions and actually talk about the wines in depth. I have been to a few wineries where it felt as if it was a chore to pour wine and talk. Kevin was the best and answered all our questions!

Our tasting experience was wonderful. We sampled an array of Stone Tower wines as well as their other label, Wild Boar. The best was comparing vintages of the same varietal. One of my favorite parts of wine tastings. We loved all of their wines, but fancied their Wild Boar Cabernet Franc. Virginia makes some superb Cab Francs, and this one happens to be one of the best we have had.

Coming in at $38, this Cab Franc had great spice notes with hints of cherry and vanilla. It is the perfect wine to have with a grille steak or pork chop. Sipping on its own is also just as good!

Ask to see the barrel room, it won’t disappoint. On the weekends if you’re hungry, they have the most wonderfully delicious wood fired pizza. Perfect to have with that glass of Cab franc!

Take a drive out to Stone Mountain and enjoy the wine and scenery!
