It’s the most wonderful time of the year! (Cue Andy Williams) Holiday parties up the wazoo, eggnog, Christmas cookies, elbowing your fellow shopper to grab that newest technology, arctic temperatures, did I mention cookies? Whether you’re a Scrooge or a holiday fan, sometimes a glass of wine – to either celebrate the holidays with family and friends or commiserate over the lines in the parking lot – is much needed.
There is a good chance you will be attending a holiday party in the next week. ALWAYS a safe bet to bring a bottle of wine. Put a bow on it and BOOM it’s a festive bottle now. Gosh, but what wines to bring? Frankly, any wine will do. Let’s be honest, bringing a host/hostess gift is a very nice gesture, so really it’s the thought that counts.
But since it is my duty to share & educate, here are a handful of wines perfect for this holiday season that won’t break the bank.
Columbia Crest wines are a solid pick. Whether you dig white wines or red, these wines will certainly please both varietal lovers.
Columbia Crest Chardonnay Grand Estate Columbia Valley is a perfect host/hostess gift. Not oaky at all, more on the fruit forward side. Apple, pear with a nice creamy butter finish. Who doesn’t like butter? $8.47
Columbia Crest Grand Estate Red Blend is perfect to pair with holiday fare. Notes of plum and black currant on the nose with coffee and smoke on the palate. This is a smooth very easy to sip red blend, which makes it a perfect balance for holiday fare. $10
Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux is a blend of Merlot, Syrah, Viognier and Cabernet Franc. This blend is full of dark fruits and a touch of chocolate. Dark cherry on the nose and palate. This wine finishes strong with smooth creamy chocolate. $13
Columbia Crest Wines can be found in Total Wine & More and ranges from $8-13 Safeway, Harris Teeter, Montgomery County Liquor Stores, Trader Joe’s, Costco and others.
Moving on to one of my favorite Wineries on the West Coast, Chateau Ste Michelle. Their wines are consistently good and never disappoint.
Perfect for holiday fare their whites are always a safe bet.
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Dry Riesling Columbia Valley is the perfect wine to pair with cheeses or just sip on its own. I am not generally a fan of Riesling, but this dry Riesling hits the spot. Crisp with balanced acidity, apple and pear on the palate. Not super dry but not at all syrupy sweet. $7
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Horse Heaven Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite Sauv Blancs. It is crisp and balanced. Cut grass and floral notes. A perfect host/hostess gift. $11
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2015 Indian Wells Chardonnay is not an oaky chard. It is creamy and soft on the palate. Butterscotch and vanilla on the nose with a nice spice finish. $15
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Indian Wells Merlot is one of my favorite Merlot’s. Silky smooth with ripe berries on the nose. Subtle spice on the palate with a pleasantly long finish. $14
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Indian Wells Red Blend is made up of 7 varietals. Syrah and Merlot are the grapes that star in this show. Ripe berries and spice. This red blend speaks for itself, it is a sure-fire win as a gift this holiday season. $14
Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley is full of dark berries and a little spice. Silky tannins and a wonderfully long finish. Pairs nicely with beef crostini. $15
