Mother Earth will thank you and your taste buds will thank you too!

This past weekend, folks around the world celebrated Earth Day — some spending time hiking outside, others marching for Science in Washington, DC. A wonderful and important day to celebrate our Earth and green practices to keep our Earth healthy, clean and thriving.

You must be wondering where I am going with this. Obviously in the direction of wine. What does that have to do with Earth Day and being eco friendly? Nowadays there is no shortage of eco friendly products – including wine. The practice of sustainable wine growing and producing isn’t new, but a lot of people don’t pay attention to it. So perhaps it is new to you. It is pretty amazing what can be done to lessen carbon emissions, or what wineries can do to use less energy and water.

I have written about Snoqualmie Wines a few times and each time I drink their wines I am always impressed with how clean and fresh they taste. Maybe that is because they have been a sustainable and organic winery since 1983. They take this eco friendly wine stuff pretty seriously.

Snoqualmie is constantly improving ways to grow, make, and run their winery in the most effective Earth friendly way. From using 100% organic grapes to using eco friendly energy options which have reduced the winery’s energy use 30% in the last 5 years! The bottles are eco friendly – they’re light eco glass bottles which result in 13% reduction in carbon emissions. The labels are made from recycled material and the corks used are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council – which means sustainable practices were used at the source of origin.

snoqualmie chardPretty cool huh? Now to the wines. They are clean, fresh and taste great. Two in particular that I just LOVE are the 2015 Chardonnay Columbia Valley and the 2014 Syrah also from Columbia Valley. Besides the incredible price tag ($10) the wines offer such a great example of organic wines. Snoqualmie Chardonnay is a great sipping wine and easy to pair with a meal. I love big oaky heavy chardonnay, but sometimes you want a citrusy smooth on the finish chard. This meets everything great about a summery chardonnay that hits all the good spots. Pear and citrus engulf the nose when you swirl and sniff followed by a wonderfully smooth and slightly toasty taste and finish. This is refreshing and crisp and the perfect white wine for a hot summer afternoon or evening. Great on its own or paired with a summer pasta with peas and prosciutto.

I LOVE Syrah. Mostly because I love black pepper and that is a characteristic that can be found in some Syrah wines. I go out of my way to try and find red wines that have a big black pepper presence. Snoqualmie hit this one out of the park! We cracked open this bottle to have with BBQ pork short ribs and its safe to say there were no more short ribs and there was not a drop of wine left. This is 100% Syrah and was given 90pts by the Wine Spectator. Plum and chocolate on the nose followed by big flavors of chocolate, blueberry and black pepper. It honestly was one of the best Syrah’s I have had in a while. Perfect pair to anything on the grill and even better with a bit of chocolate after dinner.

These wines can be found at Total Wine & More and online. Some local grocery stores and County liquor stores carry some of the Snoqualmie wines. I suggest checking out their site and purchasing a few bottles. Not only will you be sipping some great wines, you’ll be sipping on eco friendly wines. Mother Earth will thank you and your taste buds will thank you too!
